What happened to Boundless? No, not the word itself, meaning 'unlimited in extent or scope.' I'm referring to the app / website through which you could stream or download digital content for your listening pleasure, thanks to your local library network. It was owned by Baker & Taylor, a library supplier of physical books and some digital content.
Alas! Baker & Taylor has gone swiftly out of business, accompanied only by a sad trombone noise. (Full disclosure: I myself made that noise. Or perhaps it was a wailing sound. I digress). When Baker & Taylor went, so did the digital content offered by Boundless, at least through their proprietary platform.
FAM, DO NOT DESPAIR. We can still provide you with digital content. For starters, we give you access to both Overdrive / Libby and Hoopla, both of which contain e-books as well as digital audio. You can find those here: https://www.normalpl.org/download-stream. And there are some other, smaller resources at that link like AudioBookCloud (audio), Freading (digital books), and Inkie.org (e-books and local content) you can use as well. You may need to keep your library card number (starts with D0) and PIN (default is 1234) handy to create an account depending on the resource, but once you're in, you'll have access to lots and lots of great digital stuff.
"WAIT THOUGH," you say. "Are our Boundless items gone forever and ever?" The short answer: No. The longer answer: Still no, but with more details. A nonprofit organization called The Palace Project has taken virtual custody of the digital content that Illinois libraries purchased through Boundless / Baker & Taylor. They are working at lightning speed to integrate this digital content into their own app. We'll be sure to update you and post access details on our Download & Stream page (linked above) when it's available.
Fret not, Boundless aficionados. Your content will soon be back and, let's hope, easier to access than ever. Keep your eyes and ears open for The Palace Project!
