An Inside Look: A Shayna Maidel
Monday, March 14, 2022
7:00-8:00 p.m. at Heartland Theatre

An Inside Look, a collaboration between Normal Public Library and Heartland Theatre Company, provides a behind-the-scenes look at each play in Heartland’s season. Next up is A Shayna Maidel by Barbara Lebow, supported in part by the Sol Shulman Grant of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation.

An Inside Look: A Shayna Maidel takes place on Monday, March 14, 7-8 p.m., at Heartland Theatre, in the Community Activity Center at 1110 Douglas St., Normal, the building to the north of the circular drive at One Normal Plaza. This event will feature a panel of theatre artists, including director Marcia Weiss and scenic designer Chad Lowell, to present their vision of the play and tell us how they prepare. Lowell will also tell us how his Jewish ancestry connects to designing this particular show.

A Shayna Maidel is a story of courage, resilience, and the power of hope and love. Two Jewish sisters are reunited shortly after World War II in New York after years of separation—one living in the U.S. and the other living the nightmare of the Holocaust in Poland. Their stories unfold through realism, memory, and dreams in this compelling family drama intended for mature audiences.

Library staff will be on hand at the theatre with library materials available to check out. Heartland’s current safety protocols require the audience to be masked and to provide proof-of-vaccination or recent negative Covid test for this program.

The play itself opens March 31 at Heartland Theatre and runs through April 16.
