Library Fines and Fees

Fine Rates

The fines for almost all materials are 10¢ per item per day.

The only exceptions are DVDs and video games, which are $1 per item per day.

Grace Period

There is a three day grace period for all items except DVDs and video games.

You will not have any fines for items returned within three days of their due date.

If items are more than three days overdue, however, the fine for those three days will still apply.  For example, if you return one book four days after the due date, the fine will be 40¢.

Maximums on Fines

There are maximums for our overdue fines.

These maximums only apply to fines for items being late – not for fees for items that are lost or damaged.

Children’s Department Items – $3 maximum per item

Adult Department Items – $5 maximum per item

DVDs and Video Games – $15 maximum per item

Paying Fines

You may pay fines at the Front Desk using cash, check, or credit card.

If you would like to pay fines for your items immediately when you return them, please bring them with you to someone at our Front Desk.

Once you return an item, it may take several days for the item to make it through our system and for the fine to appear on your account.

Returning Items in Bookdrops

If you return items at one of our remote book drops, please allow additional time for fines to appear on your card.

If the items are returned to the book drop on time, they will not have a fine.  We pre-date the items as we check them in.

Checking Fines Online

You can check your fines on your online account.

Find out more about your online account here.

Please note that once you return an item, it may take several days for the item to make it through our system and for the fine to appear on your account.

Unpaid Fines and Fees

If you have more than $5 in unpaid fines, you will not be able to check out.

Lost or Damaged Materials

If you lose or damage an item, you will be required to pay for the cost of repairing or replacing the item, plus an additional $5 processing fee.

We’re sorry, but we are not able to make refunds for these payments.  For this reason, it’s a good idea to make sure you have really searched for a lost item before you pay for it.

Debt Collection

If you have more than $50 in fines or fees and have not responded to notices from the library, your account will be referred to a debt collection agency and an additional $10 fee will be applied to your account.
